What Is Genesis Part 1?

Genesis Part 1 is the first major expansion DLC for ARK Survival Ascended, developed by Studio Wildcard. Unlike previous ARK maps that drop you into a single open world, Genesis takes place inside a sprawling simulation run by a mysterious AI. The original ASE version released on February 25, 2020 as the fourth paid DLC Expansion Pack ($14.99 USD). The ASA remake (Genesis_WP) is currently unreleased — launch is pending.

Story Overview

Following the events of the base game, your survivor awakens inside the Genesis Simulation — a vast digital construct designed by the ancient civilization that once ruled the ARKs. You are greeted by HLN-A, a floating AI hologram who serves as your guide, quest giver, and companion throughout the expansion. She reveals that the simulation was built to train survivors for an impending threat, and your performance in the missions determines whether you are ready for what comes next.

The Simulation Concept

What makes Genesis fundamentally different from every other ARK expansion is its simulation framework. Instead of one contiguous map, Genesis Part 1 contains five distinct biomes — Bog, Arctic, Ocean, Lunar, and Volcanic — each functioning as a self-contained zone within the simulation. HLN-A can teleport you between biomes at any time, eliminating the long travel that defines traditional ARK exploration. This design lets players jump between radically different environments and gameplay styles within seconds.

HLN-A: Your AI Companion

HLN-A is the heart of the Genesis experience. This floating, hexagonal hologram follows you everywhere, offering missions, lore exposition, and teleportation services. She acts as the expansion's mission hub — approach her and select from available missions across all five biomes. HLN-A also provides context about the simulation's purpose, the creatures within it, and the overarching narrative connecting Genesis to the wider ARK storyline. Her commentary is voice-acted and dynamically responds to your actions, making her feel like a genuine companion rather than a static NPC.

The Mission System

Missions are the core progression mechanic in Genesis Part 1. Rather than the freeform sandbox of the base game, Genesis introduces over 100 structured missions ranging from racing challenges and hunting gauntlets to escort quests and arena battles. Each mission has three difficulty tiers — Gamma, Beta, and Alpha — with escalating rewards. Completing missions earns Hexagons, the expansion's currency, which can be spent on loot crates, resources, and even Tek-tier equipment at HLN-A's terminals. This gives players a clear sense of progression and purpose that the base game's open-ended nature sometimes lacks.

Progression

Progression in Genesis is tied to mission completion rather than pure exploration. As you complete more missions at higher difficulties, you unlock access to better loot pools, new mission types, and eventually the expansion's final boss arena. The Hexagon economy creates a satisfying loop: complete missions to earn currency, spend currency on better gear and tames, then tackle harder missions for even greater rewards. This makes Genesis feel more like a structured RPG campaign layered on top of ARK's survival mechanics.

Why Genesis Part 1 Is Unique

Genesis Part 1 stands apart from every other ARK expansion because it fundamentally changes how you play. The mission system gives direction to players who found the base game's sandbox overwhelming. The biome-hopping teleportation eliminates tedious travel while showcasing five wildly different environments. The Hexagon economy provides a tangible reward for every activity. And the new creatures — each biome-specific and mechanically distinct — expand the taming meta in exciting ways. Whether you are a veteran survivor or new to ARK, Genesis offers a fresh, guided experience that complements the freeform survival gameplay of the base game. Ready to jump in? Genesis Part 1 Biomes

Genesis Part 1 features five distinct biomes within the simulation, each with unique resources, creatures, and hazards. HLN-A can teleport you between them at any time.

Bog (Swamp) biome in ARK Genesis Part 1

Bog Biome

The Bog, or Swamp Biome, is the starting biome of Genesis: Part 1. It's labeled as the easiest section of the map, though it is on par with the swamps on The Island in terms of difficulty. Unlike other sections of the map, there are no climate difficulties such as cold, heat, or radiation — making it a simpler experience when compared to the other biomes.

Volcanic biome in ARK Genesis Part 1

Volcanic Biome

The Volcano is a large volcanic hellscape, home to an active volcano and Magmasaurs. It is one of the hardest biomes to survive in, second only to the Lunar biome. Ambient heat can kill unprepared survivors in minutes, and lava flows pose a constant threat. However, it is the only natural habitat of the Magmasaur — one of the most powerful tames in the game.

New Creatures in Genesis Part 1

Genesis Part 1 introduces several biome-exclusive creatures, each with unique mechanics that expand the ARK taming meta.

Magmasaur creature in ARK Genesis Part 1

Magmasaur

ReptilesOmnivoreTerritorial

The Magmasaur is a heavily armored volcanic reptile that thrives in extreme heat. It can swim through lava without taking damage, making it the undisputed king of the Volcanic biome. Adults cannot be tamed directly — instead, survivors must steal wild eggs from volcanic nests and incubate them in lava. Magmasaurs can only breed in lava.

Abilities

  • ⚡ Lava immunity — takes zero damage from lava and extreme heat
  • ⚡ Fireball projectile — ranged attack that ignites enemies and structures
  • ⚡ Searing aura — passive heat damage to nearby threats
  • ⚡ Metal and obsidian harvesting from volcanic nodes

Taming

Adults cannot be tamed. Steal eggs from Magmasaur nests in the Volcano biome — the nests are fiercely guarded, so approach with a fast flying tame. Incubate the egg at high temperature; lava or standing torches work best. Requires a Magmasaur Saddle (Level 95) to ride.

Best Uses

Magmasaurs excel at volcanic resource gathering, base defense with their fireball attacks, and raiding stone/metal structures. They are immune to fire damage, making them ideal for fighting fire-based threats. Note: they are torpor-immune and cannot be knocked out.

Bloodstalker creature in ARK Genesis Part 1

Bloodstalker

InvertebratesSanguinivore (Blood)Aggressive

The Bloodstalker is a terrifying arachnid predator that inhabits the Bog biome. It ambushes prey by hanging from trees and snatching survivors with its webbed tongue. Once mounted, the Bloodstalker becomes an incredible mobility tame capable of swinging through the canopy. It requires no saddle to ride and can be used while wielding weapons.

Abilities

  • ⚡ Web grab — snatches survivors and small creatures from range
  • ⚡ Tree swinging — rapid traversal through forested and canyon terrain
  • ⚡ Wall climbing — can scale vertical surfaces with ease
  • ⚡ Passive feeding — drains blood from webbed prey to sustain itself

Taming

Passive tame. The Bloodstalker will web you and lift you into the air — while suspended, feed it Blood Packs. The process takes several rounds and can be dangerous if other predators are nearby. Bring extra Blood Packs and a friend. Can be immobilized with a Net Projectile if needed.

Best Uses

The Bloodstalker is the ultimate mobility tame for the Bog biome. Use it for scouting, escaping dangerous situations, and reaching elevated areas. It is also useful for PvP — grab enemy players and drag them into hazards. Breedable with egg incubation at 27–30°C (81–86°F).

Ferox creature in ARK Genesis Part 1

Ferox

MammalsOmnivoreReactive

The Ferox is a small, shapeshifting mammal found in the Arctic biome. In its base form it resembles a diminutive snow creature, but when fed Element it transforms into a towering, ferocious brawler. This duality makes the Ferox one of the most versatile tames in Genesis Part 1. It can be carried by humans, worn as a shoulder pet, and can even wear hats.

Abilities

  • ⚡ Shapeshift — transforms from small to large form when fed Element
  • ⚡ Enhanced leap — large form can vault over walls and obstacles
  • ⚡ Melee prowess — massive damage in large form with knockback
  • ⚡ Shoulder pet — small form rides on your shoulder; can wear hats

Taming

Passive tame using Element as its preferred food. Approach slowly and offer Element — it will briefly transform and then return to small form, consuming the Element. Repeat until tamed. Be aware of the addiction mechanic: each feeding increases addiction, and breeding requires females at 95%+ addiction in tiny form.

Best Uses

Ferox is a front-line combat tame in its large form, capable of fighting alongside Rexes and Therizinos. In small form, it provides utility as a shoulder pet. Keep Element on hand during missions to re-trigger its transformation when the timer runs out. Rideable only in large form — no saddle required.

Astrocetus (Space Whale) in ARK Genesis Part 1

Astrocetus

MammalsCarnivoreTerritorial

The Astrocetus, also known as the Space Whale, is a massive floating cetacean native to the Lunar (High Orbit) biome. It is one of the most extraordinary tames in all of ARK — a living spacecraft equipped with a Tek saddle that enables bomber runs, teleportation, and serves as a mobile aerial base platform. It has a drag weight of 4000 and cannot be bred.

Abilities

  • ⚡ Bomb bay — drops explosive projectiles from its underside
  • ⚡ Teleportation — can blink short distances to evade or reposition
  • ⚡ Tek saddle — supports structures for a mobile flying base
  • ⚡ Vacuum immunity — operates freely in space with no oxygen needed

Taming

Knockout tame. Approach from above or behind and fire tranquilizing projectiles. The creature is slow but has high torpor, so bring plenty of ammo. Preferred food is Extraordinary Kibble or Raw Mutton. A Large Bear Trap can help keep it in place. Requires an Astrocetus Tek Saddle to ride.

Best Uses

The Astrocetus is the ultimate endgame tame for the Lunar biome. Use it as a mobile base, a bombing platform for raids, or a teleporting escape vehicle. Its Tek saddle allows you to build turrets, fabricators, and storage — a self-sufficient flying fortress. Not breedable.

Genesis Missions System

The mission system is the backbone of Genesis Part 1's progression. Instead of the freeform sandbox of the base game, Genesis offers over 100 structured missions accessible through HLN-A. Missions span all five biomes and range from racing challenges and hunting gauntlets to escort quests, puzzle rooms, and arena battles. Completing missions earns Hexagons, the expansion's currency, which you spend at HLN-A terminals for loot crates, resources, and Tek-tier items.

Each mission has three difficulty tiers. You can attempt any tier from the start, but higher tiers require better gear and tames. The difficulty you choose directly affects the quality and quantity of your rewards, creating a risk-versus-reward loop that keeps the gameplay engaging long after you have explored every biome.

Gamma

Beginner-friendly

The entry-level difficulty. Gamma missions are designed to be completable with mid-tier tames and basic gear. They serve as an introduction to each mission type and are the best way to build up your Hexagon balance early.

Rewards

Low Hexagon rewards, basic loot crates, common blueprints.

Beta

Intermediate

Beta missions ramp up the challenge significantly. Enemies have more health, timers are tighter, and some missions require specific tames or strategies. Aim for Beta once you have high-level tames and at least flak or riot armor.

Rewards

Moderate Hexagons, improved loot, uncommon to rare blueprints.

Alpha

Endgame

Alpha missions are the ultimate test. Enemies hit hard, timers are unforgiving, and one mistake can end your run. These missions require top-tier tames, Tek gear, and a solid understanding of mission mechanics. The rewards, however, are worth the risk.

Rewards

High Hexagons, premium loot crates, Mastercraft and Ascendant blueprints, Element.

Hexagons

Hexagons are Genesis's universal currency, earned by completing missions at any difficulty. Spend them at HLN-A terminals on loot crates containing blueprints, resources, and rare items. Higher-tier missions yield significantly more Hexagons, making Alpha missions the most efficient way to farm currency once you are geared for them.

Loot & Rewards

Beyond Hexagons, missions drop loot crates with quality scaling to the difficulty tier. Gamma crates offer common gear, Beta crates include uncommon and rare blueprints, and Alpha crates can contain Mastercraft and Ascendant items. Some missions also reward Element and Tek blueprints, making them essential for endgame progression.

The Genesis Boss Fight

Corrupted Master Controller

Final Boss of Genesis Part 1

Requirements

  • • Complete a minimum number of missions across all biomes
  • • Gamma, Beta, and Alpha mission completions count toward the total
  • • High-level tames recommended — Rexes, Therizinos, or Magmasaurs
  • • Full riot or Tek armor with medical brews and custom consumables
  • • A saddle with high armor rating (preferably Ascendant)

Strategy

  • • The fight has multiple phases — manage your tames' health between them
  • • Bring a mix of melee and ranged tames for different phases
  • • Watch for environmental hazards that spawn during the encounter
  • • Use Yutyrannus buff calls to boost your army's damage and resistance
  • • Keep a Daedon on passive heal to sustain your tames throughout
  • • Stay mobile — the boss has AoE attacks that can wipe clustered tames

Rewards

Defeating the Corrupted Master Controller on Alpha difficulty rewards substantial Element, high-tier Tek blueprints, and exclusive cosmetic items. The boss can be repeated, making it a reliable source of endgame resources. Victory also advances the Genesis storyline, setting up the events of Genesis Part 2.

New Features in Genesis Part 1

Genesis Part 1 introduces a wave of new systems that fundamentally change how ARK is played.

Structured Mission System

Over 100 missions across five biomes give players clear objectives and rewards, replacing the aimless wandering that can define early ARK gameplay.

Hexagon Currency

A universal currency earned through missions and spent at HLN-A terminals for loot crates, resources, and Tek-tier items. Creates a satisfying progression loop.

HLN-A AI Companion

Your floating AI companion provides missions, lore, teleportation, and dynamic commentary. She is the most fully realized NPC in ARK history.

Biome Teleportation

HLN-A can teleport you between any of the five biomes instantly, eliminating long travel times and letting you switch gameplay styles on the fly.

New Creatures

Biome-exclusive tames like the Magmasaur, Bloodstalker, Ferox, and Astrocetus each introduce unique mechanics that expand the taming meta.

Five Distinct Biomes

Bog, Arctic, Ocean, Lunar, and Volcanic — each with unique resources, hazards, weather, and creatures. No two biomes play the same way.

Fresh Progression

Genesis starts you from scratch in the simulation, making it accessible to new players while still offering deep endgame content for veterans.

Tek Unlocks

Mission rewards and Hexagon purchases include Tek blueprints and Element, accelerating access to endgame technology for dedicated players.

Genesis Part 1 Beginner Guide

A complete walkthrough from your first spawn to the final boss, covering starting strategies, taming priorities, and progression milestones.

1

First Spawn

Starting Fresh in the Simulation

When you spawn into Genesis Part 1, you start from scratch — no transferred gear, no high-level survivor. HLN-A greets you and explains the simulation's basics. Your first task is simple: survive. Pick up stones, thatch, and wood to craft your first tools. HLN-A will point you toward your first missions, but take your time getting oriented.

Choose your starting biome carefully. The Bog is the default spawn and offers the most balanced experience for new players. The Arctic and Volcanic biomes are extremely hostile to naked survivors and should be avoided until you have proper gear.

2

Best Starting Area

Where to Build Your First Base

In the Bog biome, look for elevated platforms along the root walkways. These keep you above ground-level threats like leeches and provide a defensible position. Avoid building too close to water — Bloodstalkers patrol the canopy and can snatch you off exposed platforms.

If you prefer the Ocean biome, tame a Megachelon as soon as possible. Its shell provides a ready-made base platform underwater, giving you a mobile headquarters that moves with you. For Arctic starters, find a cave entrance — caves provide natural insulation against the cold and are easier to defend.

3

First Tames

Essential Early-Game Companions

Your first tame should be a fast, expendable mount for scouting and resource runs. In the Bog, a Parasaur or Raptor works well. In the Ocean, tame an Ichthyosaurus — they are fast, easy to tame, and can help you reach the Megachelon you will want next.

Priority tames by biome: Bog → Bloodstalker for mobility; Arctic → Ferox for combat; Ocean → Megachelon for a mobile base; Lunar → Astrocetus for traversal; Volcanic → Magmasaur for resource gathering. Focus on one biome's key tame before branching out.

4

Early Game

Building Your Foundation

Focus on completing Gamma-difficulty missions to build up your Hexagon balance. Gamma missions are forgiving and introduce you to each mission type. Spend Hexagons on basic loot crates for blueprints and resources you cannot easily gather.

Upgrade from thatch to wood to stone as quickly as possible. Craft a full set of hide armor, then upgrade to flak. Tame a gathering dinosaur — an Ankylosaurus for metal and a Doedicurus for stone — to accelerate your resource collection. Preserve these tames; they are the backbone of your early economy.

5

Mid Game

Expanding Your Reach

By mid game, you should have a stone base, a few utility tames, and full flak armor. Start tackling Beta-difficulty missions for better rewards. This is also the time to explore other biomes — use HLN-A's teleportation to jump between zones and gather biome-specific resources.

Tame your biome's signature creature (Magmasaur, Bloodstalker, Ferox, or Astrocetus). These tames open up new gameplay possibilities and are often required for certain mission types. Begin stockpiling Element if you have a Ferox — it needs Element to transform and is useless without it.

6

Late Game

Preparing for the Boss

In the late game, focus on Alpha-difficulty missions. These require high-level tames with good saddles, Tek or riot armor, and a thorough understanding of mission mechanics. Alpha missions are your primary source of high-tier blueprints and Element.

Assemble your boss army: 5–10 high-level Rexes or Therizinos with Ascendant saddles, a Yutyrannus for buff calls, and a Daedon for healing. Practice the boss fight mechanics on lower difficulties before attempting Alpha. Once you feel confident, assemble your team and take on the Corrupted Master Controller to complete the Genesis Part 1 storyline.
